Tilbury took their place at top of the Ryman North Division with a 4-3 victory at Enfield Town in a thrilling encounter on Tuesday night.

On a damp night and slippery pitch, both sides had many chances. On 6 Mark Kirby brought off a good save by James Marrable. On 11 Tilbury thought they had the lead when Medine struck from 30 yards that went just wide.

The first goal of the game on 20, when a corner from the left was headed home unmarked by Liam Hope. Tilbury dominated proceedings and came close again from Medine, this time from 20 yards. Bradley Barnes on 27 hit wide from another Medine ball. On 31 Malthouse struck wide. The Towners slowly came back in to the game and a good block from Paul King and another Marrable save, denied the hosts. In the remaining 5 minutes of the half, Marrable was called upon on 3 occasions to make saves.

On the half time break, a late tackle from Leon Osei on Kevin Malthouse resulted in a red card. There was a 6 minute delay before Malthouse was carried off to hospital. The first 10 minutes of the second half was a close affair and resulted in Tilbury manager making 2 substitutions and within 5 minutes it paid off.

On 76 Enfield Town were again on level terms. A corner from the left hit bodies before Kirby bundled over the line. On 83 Tilbury made it 3-2 when Bradley Barnes went into the box and was adjudged to be tackled unfairly and the referee pointed to the spot. Another sub Jack West scored to the bottom right.

On 86 and Tilbury continuing to push, the effective Medine brought a good save from Rob Blackburne.

With referee indicating 3 minutes of added time, Enfield were awarded a corner. From the corner the ball struck the bar, before Matata was brought down and this time referee awarded a spot kick to Enfield Town. The same player stepped up to make it 3-3. With everyone in the ground then expecting the final whistle, the game continued and 2 minutes later, Bansende made room down the right hand side, crossed and Gary Henty from 35 yards riffled in off the crossbar with a stunning effort to steal the game 4-3. The referee blew up shortly after, to the delight of the Tilbury players and to the disappointment of the majority of the 172 in attendance.

After the game, a delighted Tilbury Manager Paul Vaughan commented “A very spirited performance from the boys. The 10 men of Enfield Town never let up and made it hard for us”
